Blaqbonez is fully in his element on BIG PERFORMER, a Nigerian rap record built around confidence, nightlife, women, and the larger-than-life character he brings to his music.
The title is not really trying to be mysterious. A big performer is somebody who knows how to command attention, and that is exactly the attitude Blaqbonez brings here. He talks like a man who knows people came to the show to see him and is enjoying every bit of that attention.
The production keeps things moving with a lively Afrosounds and hip-hop feel, giving Blaqbonez plenty of room for his jokes, boasts, and playful lines. P.Priime handles the production, while Blaqbonez carries the record himself. The writing is deliberately cheeky, especially when he moves between talking about performing, partying, and chasing women. The repeated hook is probably the easiest part to remember because he keeps returning to that larger-than-normal image.
What makes the record interesting is how little Blaqbonez tries to hide behind seriousness. He is clearly having fun with the character he has created. Some of the lines are outrageous, some are funny, and some are there simply because they sound good when delivered with confidence. That is very much part of his appeal as a rapper.
BIG PERFORMER is for the nights when subtlety is not really the point. It is loud in personality, playful in its writing and comfortable with the kind of excess that comes with a night out. Blaqbonez is not asking you to overthink this one; he is here to perform.
