Muje Baya is the instrumental version associated with 5Five’s Ghanaian hit, 5Five (Instrumental), stripping away the vocals and leaving the rhythmic foundation that made the original so recognisable.
5Five (Instrumental) works because the underlying production already has enough movement without needing a vocal to carry it. The rhythm has that unmistakable Ghanaian Azonto character, with a dance focused bounce and a groove that leaves plenty of room for movement. The beat keeps a fairly steady pace, allowing the repeating musical phrases to settle into the ear instead of constantly changing direction.
What becomes clearer in instrumental form is how much the rhythm does on its own. The arrangement is not excessively crowded, so the bass, drums and melodic accents can be heard more distinctly. There is a useful pocket between the main rhythmic hits that gives dancers and performers room to react. That quality also explains why the record has continued to work well in dance settings long after its original release.
